Bonhams FLASHBACK: 18th August 1999
Film, Entertainment & Celebrity Autographs

I found this old Bonhams catalogue from 1999 on eBay recently, and it’s got a good selection of costumes and props from a range of eras of Doctor Who.

There are some amazing costumes listed in this sale, many of which haven’t seen the light of day since. It would be amazing to know where they are!

Bonhams auction - 13th December 2017

It’s that time of year when Bonhams hold their Winter Entertainment auction, and there are a number of quite nice items for sale - IF you have deep pockets!!!

A Tetrap 'Stun Net' weapon, from Time And The Rani, (Seventh Doctor), 1987.
In moulded fibreglass and wood painted silver and black, 20 3/4in (52.5cm) long.

This is one of the prop weapons carried by the 'background' artist Tetraps.

Nemesis bow
A Nemesis bow, from Silver Nemesis, (Seventh Doctor), 1988.
in moulded composite/ resin material painted silver with matching cord grip and nylon bowstring, 31 1/2in (80cm) long.

FOOTNOTES
This is the original 'bow' from the Nemesis statue, formed in a curving 'Classical' style. This prop was resprayed with chrome paint in 2013 when it was used to form part of the junkyard backdrop in the 3D cinematic trailer for 'The Day Of The Doctor'.
SALEROOM NOTICES
Please note that three bows were made for use in this production. Two, of which this is one, were finished in chrome/silver paint, whilst the other was finished in FAP paint to make it glow in certain scenes.

Bonhams FLASHBACK:
2nd September 1993 Entertainment sale

I came across this vintage Bonhams catalogue dating from 1993.

In my research into sales of Doctor Who costumes and memorabilia at historical Bonhams auctions, I don’t think I’ve seen quite so many Who-related items in a general sale before - 75 items in total, most of which are costume.

Catalogues in those days were sparsely written, often containing typing errors and misattributions. Hence you will see Sontarin (not Sontaran) and Androzanni (instead of Androzani).
Other instances cite the wrong episode titles; wrong seasons; and occasional wrong aliens!


I have therefore NOT attempted to correct any of these as it is not always possible to fathom the ambiguous nature of some of the listings.

Where possible I have used the (few) photos from the catalogue to illustrate the items, but most I have sourced images from either episodes cited, or later Bonhams auctions where it would appear these items resurfaced for sale.

Bonhams FLASHBACK: 24th May 2006
Rock and Roll and Film Memorabilia

It was EXACTLY ten years ago today - during David Tennant‘s first season as The Doctor - there was a sale of Entertainment Memorabilia at Bonhams.

Some 59 Doctor Who lots were on offer (though these inflated by the sale of some 25 artworks from a 1985 book Doctor Who Illustrated A-Z, nearly all of which went unsold.

John Nathan-Turner started his association with Doctor Who as a floor assistant in season six on "The Space Pirates" and continued his association gaining promotions until he was producer on the series in 1979 until the series took a sabbatical in 1990. He was famed for collecting and wearing Hawaiian shirts throughout his life on and off set.

Bonhams FLASHBACK: -
31st March 1994 Entertainment Sale

I’m getting quite into tracking down past Bonhams Entertainment auctions where Doctor Who items were sold.

It started with the 1991 Doctor Who auction, where dozens of costumes and props were up for grabs. I’ve since traced later sales where many times from the 1991 auction were resold, and some of these still pop up today from time to time.

A couple of weeks ago I found a Bonhams catalogue from 1994, containing 22 lots of Who-related items on sale.

Frustratingly due to the cost of producing print publications in the days, there are no photographs to illustrate the items on offer (every image would have had to be taken on film and processed, compared to the instant and cheap nature of digital photography today).

These sales also pre-date the internet, so finding the realised prices is near impossible.

Less care seems to have been taken in preparing the text in the catalogue.


There are a number of spelling errors and possible mis-titling of episodes, but since some of these are for pre-production scripts (and therefore possibly correct at the time) I have replicated the text here exactly as it appeared in the 1994 catalogue.

Bonhams FLASHBACK: -
24th August 1992 Entertainment Sale

Last week I showed you the content of a Bonhams sale from January 1992. In it a large number of ex-BBC Costume Dept outfits from Doctor Who were sold off.

Since then I have found another catalogue from 1992, this time from August.

Interestingly a number of the extensive Doctor Who items sound very much like those sold back in January, though with much higher estimates this time around.

More recently I think we have seen some of these lots continuing to be sold on. It’s fascinating to trace the items back through the various auction catalogues, following the prices they sell for.

Bonhams FLASHBACK: 24th January 1992
The BBC Costume Dept sale

Exactly 24 years ago TODAY there was an unusual auction at Bonhams to sell off a vast amount of ex-BBC costume department items.

Due to the volume of items on offer, the sale was held at the BBC Costume Warehouse, which at the time was on the Royal London Industrial Estate in North Acton.

Most of the sale was non-descript items, broken down into sections such as PERIOD COSTUMES - GREEK/ROMAN, MEDIAEVAL, TUDOR, ELIZABETHAN, STUART, GEORGIAN and REGENCY, VICTORIAN and EDWARDIAN etc.

It then moved on to SPORTSWEAR and MISCELLANEOUS before CHILDRENS and LIGHT ENTERTAINMENT. There was even a section for FANCY DRESS and ARMOUR, CHAINMAIL ETC.

Then things got more interesting with NARNIA prior to the big draw the sale - the SCIENCE FICTION section.

This was broken down into DR WHO, BLAKE’S 7, THE FLIP SIDE OF DOMINICK HYDE, STAR COPS, and OTHER SCIENCE FICTION COSTUMES.

The sale closed with a section of late additions, which included an extra Doctor Who lot.

I recently picked up a copy of the sales catalogue on aBay - such as it is. Back in 1992 this consisted of a pocket folder with a stapled loose sheet listing of the items for sale. There are no photographs or illustrations, and the descriptions are scant to say the least.

I have transcribed all the Doctor Who items.

the bomb of wooden frame with vacuum-formed PVC outer shell which has been painted in grey, two motifs in yellow paint of a skull in a gas mask with cross-bones to centre and yellow paint detail around bomb 'nose', later metal loop has been inserted in the nose, the bomb was made for the scene in the poison weapon arsenal of the secret military base; together with a copy of a plan of a marine camp and 2 photocopies of construction drawings for bombs, the bomb approximately 102cm (40in) high (4)

Bonhams auction - 10th December 2014

Can’t believe 2014 is nearly over - so to confirm its immenant demise Bonhams are holding their usual December Entertainment Memorabilia sale.

The Caretakers uniform originally sold at the Bonahms auction in 1991.

The Panama hat was in a sale earlier this year, though went unsold. Its estimate then was £800 to £1,200.

Lot 143
Doctor Who: Paradise Towers, the Chief Caretaker's uniform,
1987, comprising a grey military-style jacket with matching trousers bearing label to the waistband inscribed in black ink Richard Briars (sic) 1, the jacket with black vinyl and silver braid detailing, matching belt and cap, as worn by Richard Briers in the serial.

Lot 144
Doctor Who: Sylvester McCoy - an original screen-used and signed trademark Panama hat, a silk Paisley handkerchief attached as a hatband, the inside signed and inscribed in black marker This belongs to Sylvester McCoy, inner band stamped Panama Type Bates 21A Jermyn Street London SW, Size 7.

FOOTNOTES
Research indicates that this hat was likely to be that worn by Sylvester McCoy during Season 24 of 'Doctor Who', in 1987.
